MVB: Wildcats Drop Tri-Match to New Paltz and Hunter.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's volleyball team took on SUNY New Paltz and Hunter in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats dropped both matches on the day, losing 3-0 to SUNY New Paltz, and 3-1 to Hunter.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

In the first match, the Hawks controlled the first two sets, winning 25-14 in each set. In both sets, the Hawks went on a run in the middle of the set that would be the difference. In the third set, the Wildcats raced out to an 8-4 lead, before allowing the Hawks to tie the game at 8-8. After taking a 15-14 lead, the Hawks would win the next 5 points to take a 19-15 lead. The Wildcats would refuse to give in, however, cutting the Hawks lead to 23-22 before giving up the last two points to lose the set 25-22.

Peter Gottler led the Wildcats with 7 kills, while Joshua Slater led the team with 19 assists and 9 digs. 

In the second match, Hunter controlled the first set, winning 25-14 after racing out to a 16-6 lead to open the match. The Wildcats would respond quickly, however, taking a 10-6 lead in the second set, highlighted by multiple Peter Gottler aces and kills. The Wildcats would win the second set 25-18 to tie the match 1-1. Despite the strong second set, Hunter would win the next two sets 25-17 and 25-19 to win the match 3-1.

Peter Gottler also had a tremendous second match, recording 4 aces and 10 kills. James Mion also recorded 9 kills for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow as they head to Old Westbury for a tri-match with Old Westbury and John Jay.
