MVB: Wildcats Go 0-3 at Nazareth Tournament.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's volleyball team lost three matches this weekend at the Nazareth Invitational Tournament. The 'Cats lost their second match of the weekend to #5 nationally ranked St. John Fisher and played two very tight five-set matches in their first and third contests of the weekend. The Wildcats are now 3-8 this season.

 

 

MATCH #1:

SUNY Potsdam - 3

SUNY Poly - 2

(22-25, 26-24, 16-25, 25-23, 15-10)

 

The Wildcat's first match of the tournament was a tightly contested battle between the Potsdam Bears and the SUNY Poly Wildcats. Poly took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set with a tight win in set one and a dominant 25-16 win in the third set. The Wildcats could not seal the deal in the fourth or fifth set, losing 23-25 and 15-10 to lose to the Bears 3-2.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Jason Aubrey had a match-high 17 kills on 45 swings. He also had 11 digs, three block assists, and a pair of aces.
  • Kohei Clark had 13 kills, nine digs, and an ace.
  • Peter Gottler had 11 kills on 29 swings and had eight digs.
  • Jordan Weir had 10 kills, three block assists, and a solo block.
  • Nathan Farnham tied his career high with 52 assists in the match. He also had 13 digs, two solo blocks, three block assists, and four kills.
  • Jacob Wicher had a game-high 14 digs.

 

MATCH #2:

SUNY Poly - 0

#5 St. John Fisher - 3

(25-14, 25-18, 28-26)

 

SUNY Poly lost their second match on Friday night 0-3 to #5 ranked St. John Fisher. The Wildcats were outmatched in the first set by the Cardinals who hit .391 in the first. The team bounced back to play the next two sets close losing the second set 25-18 and forcing the match to four extra points in the third. The Wildcats hitting percentage in the match was .071 while Fisher hit .271. St. John Fisher was also dominant on the block, recording 10 block assists in the three-setter.

MATCH #3:

SUNY Poly – 2

Mount Union - 3

(30-28, 21-25, 11-25, 25-11, 16-14)

 

The third match of the weekend was an up-and-down affair for both teams. The Wildcats lost the first set 30-28 but won the second 25-21. The third and fourth sets got a little lopsided with the Wildcats winning the third 25-11 to go up 2-1 in the match. The fourth set was a complete 180-degree spin with the Wildcats losing to Mount Union 25-11 to force a decisive fifth set. In the fifth, the Wildcats lost 16-14 to drop their third match of the weekend.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Jason Aubrey tried his hardest to will the Wildcats to a win in the match. He had a match-high 20 kills on 44 swings with an ace and six digs.
  • Peter Gottler had 12 kills three aces, five digs, and a block assist.
  • Nathan Farnham had 43 assists, 10 digs, three aces, a solo block, and a block assist.
  • James Mion had a match-high four service aces, six kills, a solo block, and a block assist.
  • Jacob Wicher had a match-high 14 digs.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will host the #8 team in the nation on Wednesday, February 15th. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start at the Wildcat Field House. The game will be streamed live on the SUNY Poly Sports Network (SPSN).
