MVB: Wildcats Earn Third Win of the Season 3-1 Over Sage.

UTICA, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's volleyball team earned their third win of the season on Wednesday night 3-1 over the Russell Sage Gators (25-20, 25-15, 24-26, 25-12). The Wildcats were dominant in the second and fourth sets hitting .929 and .438 in those sets respectively. They also held a significant advantage on the block and on the serving line. SUNY Poly is now 3-5 this season.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Wildcats struggled to serve in the first set but were able to win the first by getting the Gators on their heels. Poly out swung the Gators 21-6 in the first and had 13 kills to the Gators' three. The Wildcats had 13 kills on 14 swings in the second set to dominate the second set with a .929 hitting percentage. Sage fought back in the third to earn a set win with a match-high 11 kills in the third. The Wildcats had their lowest hitting percentage of the match in the third with a .222. The Wildcats got back to form in the fourth, starting the set with a 7-0 run. They took the early lead and ran with it to close out the match with a 25-12 win.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Jason Aubrey had a match-high 12 kills on 16 swings. His .562 hitting percentage in the match is a season-high. He also had an ace and two digs for the Wildcats.
  • James Mion had 11 kills on 17 swings, two block assists, a pair of digs, and an ace for Poly.
  • Peter Gottler hit a match-high .571. The freshman recorded 10 kills on 14 swings, had the match's only solo block, and had four block assists.
  • Jordan Weir had four block assists, six kills, and a dig for the Wildcats.
  • Kohei Clark had more service aces (5) than the entire Gators team. He also had eight kills and a match-high six digs.
  • Nathan Farnham had 39 assists for the Wildcats. He also had three kills and a pair of aces.
  • Elijah Tortorici had a team-high 11 kills and a team-high three aces for Russell Sage.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will travel to Rochester to take part in the Nazareth/St. John Fisher Invitational Tournament. The Wildcats will play three games in two days. They will take on Potsdam and St. John Fisher on Friday and will wrap up the weekend against Mount Union on Saturday.
