MVB: Wildcats Season Comes to an End in the NECC Semifinals.

ENDICOTT, Mass. - The #4 seeded SUNY Poly men's volleyball team fell to #1 Endicott on Thursday in the semifinal round of the NECC Championship Tournament. The Wildcats lost the match 3-1 with set scores of 25-15, 23-25, 25-10, 25-19.

The Endicott Gulls dominated sets one and three, winning by 10 or more points. The Wildcats won a tight second set 25-23 and fought hard to keep the fourth set close, but ultimately fell 25-19. The difference in the match was the teams hitting percentages. Endicott hit .280 as a team while the Wildcats, who took more swings, hit  -.019. That coupled with 14 service aces for the Wildcats spelled defeat.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Jason Aubrey led the Wildcats with a team-high nine kills on 34 swings. He also had a pair of digs in the match.

  • James Mion had eight kills and a team-high .400 hitting percentage. He also had four block assists.

  • Nathan Farnham had 21 assists, a service ace, two digs, four total blocks, and a kill.

  • Garrett Hassard finished his career as a Wildcat with a two-block assist, two kill, two dig match.

  • Matthew Russo had three kills, an ace, a solo block, a block assist, and a dig in his last career match for the 'Cats.

  • Andrew Bertino had five digs and two assists in his last career match.

While the end of the season was a let-down for the Wildcats, the season was an exciting one. It saw Garrett Hassard become the all-time total blocks and the all-time solo blocks leader at SUNY Poly, it saw James Mion have one of the best defensive games in NCAA Division III history, and it saw the Wildcats get within one game of the NECC Championship match. The lasting legacy left behind by this year's three seniors will help the Wildcats young roster strive for greatness in 2023. This season was certainly one to build off of.
