WLAX: Wildcats Come Out on Top Against the Beavers

Farmington, ME - The SUNY Poly women's lacrosse team picked up an important 14-10 conference game win against The University of Maine at Farmington Beavers. Callie Johnson led the way for the Wildcats, scoring six goals on nine shots. Katie Kopcza also continued her impressive season, picking up three goals and four assists. The win propels the Wildcats to 6-7 on the season, and 4-1 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

Katie Kopcza got the Wildcats on the board first, scoring only 50 seconds into the matchup. The Beavers quickly responded, scoring a couple of goals to go up one. After another goal from the Beavers, SUNY Poly would rip off the next three goals, giving themselves a 5-3 lead at the end of the first period. 

UMF would score first in the second period, slimming the Wildcat lead to one. That would be the only goal of the period for the Beavers. SUNY Poly would go on to once again score three goals in a row to end the period. Katelynn Truax, Madison Bastien and Abigail Rosaschi would be the goal scorers for the Wildcats. SUNY Poly would hold an 8-4 lead going into halftime. 

UMF started the third quarter strong, scoring two goals in a row to cut the Wildcat lead in half. Madyn LaFleur and Callie Johnson would put the Wildcats back up by four before the end of the quarter. 

Both teams would showcase strong offensive capabilities in the final quarter, scoring four goals a piece. Callie Johnson would score 3 goals in the period, helping the Wildcats close the door on UMF. SUNY Poly would go on to win by a score of 14-10. 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: 

  • Katie Kopcza picked up seven points (three goals & four assists) 
  • Callie Johnson scored six goals on nine shots
  • Maddie Bastien scored two goals on three shots

The Wildcats hit the road for their final game of the season against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos. That game is scheduled for Saturday, April 27th at noon.
