Lady Laxers Play Strong Second Half in Loss to Gordon

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The SUNYIT Women's Lacrosse Team (0-2, 0-0 NEAC) fell to the Fighting Scots of Gordon College in their second and final game of their 2013 southern swing, 17-5. With the win Gordon improved to 2-0 while the Wildcats fall to 0-2.

The Wildcats were led by a pair of Northstars, as Cicero-North Syracuse High School alumni Amanda Bohne (Clay, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse High School) led the team with two goals, while first-year Laura Tolbert (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse High School) netted a score for the second-straight game to open the season.

In addition, Wildcat cross country standout-turned-laxer Carli Rogan (Colonie, N.Y. / Colonie Central High School) scored her first goal of the season, while 2012 3rd Team All-NEAC defender Caitlin Cottell (Eaton Town, N.Y. / Red Bank Catholic High School) showcased her skills on the other side of the field, scoring her first goal of the season with 11:35 to go in the first half.

The Wildcats ability to score on a superior team was a good step in the right direction for the second-year program. Ultimately Gordon just had too many weapons, as the Scots utilized a balanced attack with eight different goal scorers to cruise to the 12-point victory. Junior Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.) led all scorers with four goals and two assists, while junior Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded three goals and an assist and sophomore Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) notched her first collegiate hat trick. Rounding out the scoring were senior Mindy Fowler (Winslow, Maine), junior Stephanie Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.), sophomore Grace Fabry (Escondido, Calif.), and freshman Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) with one goal apiece and sophomore Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.), grad student Krysti Leach (Naples, Maine) and Fitzgerald with one assist each. Senior Alana Woods (Medford, Mass.) and freshman Ani Karabashian (Ventor, N.J.) split the day in net, combining for three saves in the win.

Stemming the Scot onslaught on the day was keeper Aubrey Campbell (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn High School), who had a standout day in the cage, turning away 12 of the Scots' attempts.

The Scots did their damage with runs of 7-0 and 7-1 in the first half, but to the Wildcats credit the second half consisted of even scoring, with both teams netting three goals each.

Gordon returns home to host non-conference Emerson on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m., while SUNYIT will be back in New York to visit Bard on Friday, March 22. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
