MARCY, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball team hosted cross-town rival Utica College on Wednesday night. The Wildcats got behind in early, but a big run in the second quarter gave them a lead which they held for the entire second half. With the 70-60 win, the Wildcats are now 2-2 this season. Utica is 5-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first quarter was tightly contested with the Pioneers edging out the Wildcats by three points in the first ten minutes of play. The lead for the Pioneers was built on the back of Nicolette Conkin who scored 11 of Utica's 17 points in the quarter. She went 3-3 from behind the arc and shot 4-5 from the field in the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats tied the game on a Jaida Washington (Elmira, N.Y.) layup with 8:44 left in the quarter. That was the turning point of the second as the Wildcats went on a 19-7 run to wrap up the first half with an eight-point lead. The Wildcats were led in the second quarter by Jaida Washington who had nine points and four rebounds in the quarter.
The game wrapped up with the Wildcats holding tight to the lead for the entire second half to secure the win over Utica.
NOTABLES:
- Jaida Washington had a career-high 21 points in the game and was just two rebounds shy of a double-double. She also had five assists, a game-high four steals, and a block in the game.
- Taylor Aybar (Woodside, N.Y.) was just one rebound and one assist short of a triple-double. The senior had 12 points, nine assists, and nine rebounds. She went 8-8 at the free-throw line.
- Taylor Ann Day (Brooktondale, N.Y.) had 11 points for SUNY Poly, her Wildcat career high. She also had two rebounds and a block.
- Cassidy Albright (New York Mills, N.Y.) and Molly Burdick (Johnson City, N.Y.) each scored eight points for the Wildcats. Albright had a block, a steal, and five rebounds. Burdick had three steals, two rebounds, and an assist.
- Utica College's Sydney Przygoda played an outstanding game. She scored a team-high 20 points shooting 58% from the field. She also had a game-high 19 rebounds, three steals, a block, and an assist.
- Nicolette Conkin had 15 points and had a team-high five assists. She had a red-hot start to the game hitting three 3-pointers in a row in the first quarter.
- Brigid Johndrow had a solid all-around game for the Pioneers. She had 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
UP NEXT:
The Wildcats will host the Penn State Berks Nittany Lions on Saturday, December 7th. The game will be the first NEAC game of the season for the Wildcats. The last meeting between the Wildcats and the Nittany Lions resulted in a three-point win for the Wildcats on the road. The Nittany Lions are 2-4 this season.
