WBB: Wildcats Beat Wells and Keuka to Start Their NEAC Campaign 2-0.

MARCY, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball swept their first two NEAC Conference games of the season this past weekend against Wells College and Keuka College. Game one was a nail biting victory for the Wildcats 59-58. The game ended with a last second game winning shot being called off by the referees on a traveling violation. Game two was much more comfortable for the Wildcats as they played some great defense, holding rival Keuka to just 36 points in their 52-36 win.

Game one was a back and forth battle between the Wildcats and the Express. The Express got off to a good start, jumping out to a three point lead in the first quarter. The Wildcats would get themselves back in the lead by outscoring Wells 20-11 in the second. The Wildcats would be outscored in the third, but held the lead heading into the final quarter of play. With just seconds remaining on the clock, Wells leading scorer Ashida Cooper took the game into her hands. Cooper dribbled up the court as the clock ran down. SUNY Poly's Emily Alicea (Mohegan Lake, N.Y. / Lakeland HS) guarded Cooper tightly and came up with what looked to be a steal. Cooper battled with Alicea for control of the ball. Cooper was able to gain control in the struggle and launched a desperate shot with time expiring. The shot found the bottom of the net, but Cooper was called for a travel in the process, turning over the ball to the Wildcats who passed the ball in with just .4 seconds on the clock and finished out the hard fought win.

Lauren Knowles (Salisbury Mills, N.Y. / Washingtonville HS) had a solid game for the Wildcats. She scored a team high 20 points and had six rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Geena Gallo (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa HS) had 16 points, two steals and five rebounds in the game.

In game two of the NEAC weekend, the Wildcats took on rival Keuka College. The Wildcats held the Wolfpack to just 12 points in the first half, jumping out to a large lead early. The Wildcats held on to the lead for the remainder of the game to secure the 52-36 win.

Lauren Knowles recorded her second double-double of the season. She had 13 rebounds and thirteen points. Knowles also had four steals and a block in the game. Geena Gallo led all scorers in the game with 14 points. She also had nine rebounds and two assists. Emily Alicea tied her season high with 10 points in the game. She also had three assists, two steals and a rebound in the game.

With the two wins the Wildcats improve their overall record to 3-1 and their NEAC record to 2-0. The Wildcats will be back in action on Thursday when they will host Albany College of Pharmacy and Health. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM tip off at SUNY Poly's Campus Center Gym.
