Women’s Basketball Succumbs to 2nd Half Comeback by Mustangs

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly Women's Basketball Team (11-7, 9-2 NEAC) held an 11-point advantage at halftime of Tuesday evening's road game at Morrisville State, but were unable to survive a furious second half rally by the home team, which scored 54 points in the second frame to take the victory, 81-70.

SUNY Poly was outscored by 22 in the second half as Mustang standout Alyssa Gratien scored 25 of her game-high 30 points in the period. Gratien made 9 of 16 from the field and 5 of 10 from 3-point range while knocking down a perfect 7 for 7 from the free throw line.

As a team the Mustangs held a huge advantage from the charity stripe, burying 27 of 30 (90%) for the game.

Wildcat forward Geena Gallo (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) led the way for the Wildcats with 20 points on 7 of 12 from the field, while also grabbing a team-high 9 rebounds.

Molly MacLachlan (Marcellus, N.Y. / Marcellus) and Emily Alicea (Mohegan Lake, N.Y. / Lakeland) joined Gallo as the only other Wildcats in double-figures. MacLachlan also dished out a game-high 8 assists.

The Mustangs wasted no time getting back into the game in the second half, opening the period with a 12-2 run to pull within a point at 40-39, less than four minutes into the half.

The Wildcats battled and actually held a lead with as little as 7:34 to go after a made three-pointer by MacLachlan. An Alyssa Gratien three-pointer seconds later would put the Mustangs ahead for good, however, and was part of a run of 9-straight points for Gratien.

The loss snaps a five-game win streak for the Wildcats and drops the team to 9-2 in conference, the same as the Mustangs after Tuesday night. SUNY Poly will continue their road swing with a game at Penn State Abington next, to take place this Saturday at 1:00 pm.
