Wildcats Improve to 6-4 with 84-55 Victory over SUNY-Canton

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Basketball Team (6-4, 3-0 NEAC) won their second straight on Sunday, following up a tight win over Alfred State yesterday with a drama-less win over SUNY-Canton, 84-55.

Ten of SUNYIT's eleven active players recorded points in the blowout, with Nijah Townsend (Bronx, N.Y. / Truman) coming off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 on the game.

Townsend did all her damage close to the hoop, knocking down 8-of-13 from the floor and grabbing 6 rebounds in her 19 minutes of work.

While the outcome was still somewhat in doubt early on, starter Lauren Knowles (Salisbury Mills, N.Y. / Washingtonville) also put together a strong performance. Despite playing just 22 minutes, Knowles recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, leading all players in the latter category.

With 6:54 to play the Wildcats led by just five, 20-15, but closed the half on a 26-10 run to take a commanding lead. SUNYIT pushed the pace during the run, with the Wildcats' run-outs aided in a big way by 3 steals and 3 assists by Tierney McGlynn (Watervliet, N.Y. / Watervliet) over the final 7 minutes of the half. McGlynn finished the game with game-highs of 5 assists and 5 steals.

Providing an added spark for SUNYIT was the play of reserves Jennifer Bullock (Bronx, N.Y. / NYC Museum) and Mornique Murphy (Manhattan, N.Y. / Bryant). Bullock came into the game late in the first half and immediately knocked down a jumper, then closed out the half for the Wildcats by coming off a screen to nail a 17-footer with just a few seconds remaining. Bullock went on to play 17 minutes and was one of four Wildcats to score in double figures, netting 10 points on 5-of-7 from the floor.

Murphy, for her part, added 5 points and 2 assists in her 14 minutes of work, including a clever pass in the second half to Shannon Tooley (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg) that resulted in the first-year player's first bucket of the season.

SUNYIT will head next to Morrisville State for a doubleheader along with the men's team on Tuesday. The team's first NEAC contest of the new year is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
