Wildcats Win Big as Brognano is Honored

MARCY, N.Y. – It was a great day for celebrations as the SUNYIT Women's Basketball Team (11-7, 9-3 NEAC) finally defeated the visiting Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill (6-14, 5-9 NEAC), 72-51. After the game, SUNYIT senior Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) was honored for becoming the school's all-time leading scorer earlier in the season. Brognano broke a record that had stood for almost 30 years at SUNYIT, and was also featured in the sports section of the Utica Observer –Dispatch today.

The timing of the ceremony was fortuitous, as on the other side of the floor the Fighting Tigers had records of their own to break. With her 16th point late in the second half, Cobleskill senior Heidi Anderson did exactly what Brognano had done earlier in the season by becoming the Fighting Tigers's all-time leading scorer. Anderson finished with 18 points on the night to lead her team.

Of course, there was still a game to be played. Due to a meeting in a non-conference tournament at the start of the season, Wednesday's match up was actually the third meeting between these two teams in the 2012-13 season. While the Fighting Tigers got the better of the Wildcats in the team's first two matchups, it was all SUNYIT on Wednesday. The Wildcats jumped out to a 38-20 lead at halftime and never looked back, never allowing the visitors within single digits the rest of the game.

Brognano would finish the game with 16 points, but junior Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) continued her hot shooting with 21 points on 9 for 15 shooting. The 5-8 guard also pulled down 8 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.

The Wildcats will return to action with a big home game against rival Keuka this Saturday. Game time is set for 1:00 pm, to precede the men's game at 3:00 pm.
