Wildcats Upset at SUNY Cobleskill, 59-56

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Basketball Team (9-7, 7-3 NEAC) were upset for the second time this season at SUNY Cobleskill (6-12, 5-7 NEAC) Wednesday night, losing a wrestling match to the Fighting Tigers, 59-56. The two teams combined for 44 fouls and 41 turnovers in the game.

Most of the brawling occurred in what only a master of understatement would call a "rough-and-tumble first half," as the two teams combined for a preposterous 27 fouls in the first 20 minutes of play. The visiting Wildcats bore the brunt of what will inevitably be known as Whistlepalooza 2013, accounting for 17 team fouls in the half. In all, a whopping seven players picked up at least two fouls (four of whom are starters for the Wildcats), with one unlucky overachiever recording three.

With half the visiting team (literally) in foul trouble, the home Tigers pounced: over the final 6:27 of the half SUNY Cobleskill eclipsed a 23-11 SUNYIT lead by going on a 16-3 run.

With most of the population of Utica languishing in foul trouble, an unlikely contributor in Allison Short (Port Byron, N.Y. / Port Byron) stepped up to stop the hemorrhaging. The junior-transfer knocked down a three-ball on an assist from SUNYIT tri-captain Jennifer Bullock (Bronx, N.Y. / NYC Museum School) with just under three seconds to go in the half, giving SUNYIT a 28-27 edge heading into the locker room.

The lifespan of Short's heroics lived up to her name, however, as the Wildcats quickly fell behind in the second half. SUNYIT would not reclaim the lead until an Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) layup with 5:35 to play. Hanehan continued to fill up the stat sheet on the night, flirting with a triple-double yet again with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists.

The home team would clamp down soon thereafter, however, amazingly holding SUNYIT to just three points over the final 3:27 of the game to turn a 53-53 tie into a 59-56 win.

The Wildcats will have another chance at the Fighting Tigers less than a week from now, but first must travel to Penn St.-Berks for a 1:00 pm match up this Saturday.
