Career Day for Hanahan Helps Wildcats to Conference Win #5

MARCY N.Y. – The SUNYIT women's basketball team squared up against the Cazenovia College Wildcats on Wednesday afternoon in their sixth NEAC Conference game of the season. The SUNYIT Wildcats never trailed in the game and ended up victorious by the final score of Cazenovia 77, SUNYIT 91.

SUNYIT jumped out to a quick lead as senior Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY / Rome Free Academy) hit her first of five three pointers on the day in just the first 6 seconds of the game. Lyndsey finished the game with 28 points, 5 assists, and 6 rebounds. The SUNYIT Wildcats kept their foot on the gas for the entirety of the first half as they went into the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 11 point lead.

Despite Cazenovia never having the lead, they did come close in the second half as they fought to bring the game within 1 point with 7:26 left in the game. Senior Megan McDermott was a pivotal part of the Cazenovia offense. She scored 26 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and had 6 assists, but was in foul trouble late in the game which hurt Cazenovia's chances for the come from behind win. The Cazenovia Wildcats got a big spark from behind the arc from sophomore Haley Zambito who netted 5 three pointers on the day. All of Haley's 15 points came from behind the 3-point line.

SUNYIT junior Abbey Hanahan (Stillwater, NY / Stillwater H.S.) had a game to remember. She registered a double-double scoring a game/career high 30 points and a game/career high 17 rebounds. Abbey was also nearly perfect from the charity stripe going 14-15.  Hanahan's stats for the game were not only gaudy, but timely as ten of her thirty points came in the last 7 minutes of the game to help extend SUNYITs lead from 3 to 14.

The big time win against Cazenovia puts SUNYIT's win streak at 5 games and brings their record to (7-5, 5-1 NEAC) and drops Cazenovia to (2-12, 2-4 NEAC). SUNYIT continues their home-stand with a conference game against Lancaster Bible on Monday January 21st at 12:00 pm in the SUNYIT Campus Center Gym.
