Wildcats Nail 12 Threes En Route to 87-72 Win Over Cortland

MARCY, N.Y. – The Lady Wildcats (1-3) grabbed their first victory of the season in style Friday night, beating the Cortland State Red Dragons (3-5) at home, 87-72. SUNYIT shot the lights out, hitting on 46% of their shots for the game and a whopping 55% of their three-point attempts.

SUNYIT put four players in double-figures, but were led once again by Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy), who had a monster game with 25 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Brognano connected on six of her ten three-point attempts, bringing the crowd to its feet multiple times throughout SUNYIT runs in the first and second halves.

Brognano was nearly equaled by first-year point guard Emily Alicea (Mohegan Lake, N.Y. / Lakeland), who scored 17 points on a super-efficient 6 of 10 from the floor that included 4 of 5 from long range.

Despite the stellar individual performances by Brognano and Alicea, however, it was the Wildcats' team offense that led to the point surge, as SUNYIT registered 16 assists to just 12 turnovers.

The Red Dragons to their credit played hard through the final whistle, as Megan Touhey poured in 22 for the visitors on 8 of 18 from the field. Touhey also registered a game-high 4 steals as the Red Dragons pressed the Wildcats throughout most of the second half.

SUNYIT will have a week off before facing another tough regional foe at home next Friday when the Ithaca Bombers come to town. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
