Lady Wildcats Cruise to 69-44 Victory Over Penn St.-Berks

UTICA, N.Y. – The Lady Wildcats (16-3, 10-1 NEAC) rolled to a 69-44 win on Saturday over visiting Penn St.-Berks (6-13, 5-8 NEAC). SUNYIT continued to play lockdown defense, holding the Lady Lions to just 19 of 64 from the field, and 2 of 17 from three-point range.

The Lions surprised the entire gym early in jumping out to a 6-0 lead thanks in part to a pair of layups by speedy guard Shakiyla Stone. Berks stretched their advantage to 10-5, but that would be the end of the party – SUNYIT responded with a 15-0 run to go up 20-10, and closed the half in the driver's seat, up 41-20.

Stone led in points for the Nittany Lions with 10 on the day, while for the Wildcats it was Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, N.Y. / RFA) filling up the stat sheet. The star two-guard poured in 19 points on 6 of 12 from the field while recording 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 5 assists, including a circus-like wraparound pass to Sarah Couvillon (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) that drew "oohs" and "aahs" from the crowd.

While there were necessarily few bright spots for the visiting Lady Lions, reserve forward Sherrie Satchel made her presence felt in 20 minutes of play, recording 4 impressive blocks with her 6-foot frame and pulling down 6 rebounds.

As the Wildcat lead broke the 30-point margin early in the second half, patrons got to see hard-working reserves Maggie Werenczak (Mohawk, N.Y. / Mohawk), Lauren Marleau (Prospect, N.Y. / Holland Patent), and Jennifer Bullock (Bronx, N.Y. / NYC Museum) mix it up on the hardwood. Leading the way was Marleau, who recorded 6 points and 5 rebounds in 16 minutes of work.

SUNYIT now travels to Cobleskill on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
