SB: Wildcats Complete Series Sweep of Canton; Critelli Throws Second No-Hitter of the Weekend.

SOMEWHERE, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly Wildcats swept the SUNY Canton Roos in a doubleheader on Saturday, winning the first game 12-0 and the second game 8-0. Starting pitcher Trinity Critelli threw her second consecutive no-hitter for SUNY Poly in the first game, striking out 16 batters in six innings of work. Aeron Hamm and Kimberly Birmingham both had monster days at the plate for Poly in the wins. The Wildcats are now 15-4 this season with a perfect 6-0 record in NAC play.

 


GAME ONE:

SUNY Poly – 12

SUNY Canton – 0

WP: Trinity Critelli (10-1)

LP: Caitlyn Reed (2-9)

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Poly's Starting pitcher Trinity Critelli led the way for the Wildcats with her second no-hitter in as many days. She struck out 16 of the 19 batters that she faces over six innings of work. With the win, Critelli improved to 10-1 on the season.

 

Offensively, SUNY Poly was led by senior shortstop Amy DeSena, who hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to cap off a four-hit, four-RBI performance. Second baseman Kimberly Birmingham also had a strong showing, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

 

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Kelly Powell hit an RBI double to give SUNY Poly a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats then broke the game wide open in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring a total of 11 runs.

 

With the loss, SUNY Canton fell to 2-13 on the season. Pitcher Caitlyn Reed took the loss for the Roos, allowing 16 hits and 10 earned runs over six innings of work.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Amy DeSena hit her first career home run for the Wildcats in the top of the sixth inning. It was a grand slam.
  • Kimberly Birmingham went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
  • Aeron Hamm went 2-for-4 with a home run. It was her first this season. She had two RBI.
  • Kelly Powell went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Gabriella Elixson went 2-2 with two walks, two runs scored, and an RBI.
  • Ava Faragon had a pair of hits in five at-bats with an RBI.
  • Maddelyn Hoehn went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Taylor Hunter had a double. She went 1-for-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Poly got off to a strong start in the first inning when Maddelyn Hoehn scored on an RBI single by Ava Faragon. Aeron Hamm then blasted a two-run home run to left field to give SUNY Poly a 3-0 lead.

 

In the second inning, SUNY Poly added two more runs when Kimberly Birmingham hit a two-RBI triple to right field. Hamm then doubled to center field to score Birmingham making it a 6-0 game.

 

SUNY Poly's final two runs came in the sixth inning when Birmingham hit another triple down the right-field line, driving in Amy DeSena. Birmingham also scored on the play after a throwing error to give SUNY Poly an 8-0 lead.

 

SUNY Poly pitcher Joy Stevens dominated in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out four batters in six innings of work. Abigail Sawyer took the loss for SUNY Canton, giving up eight runs on 12 hits in six innings pitched.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Aeron Hamm went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, her second of the day. She also had a double and drove in three runs for the Wildcats. She also stole two bases in the game.
  • Kimberly Birmingham had a pair of hits in her two at-bats. She had two triples, drove in three runs, and scored twice.
  • Maddelyn Hoehn went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. She also stole a base.
  • Ava Faragon had a hit and an RBI in the game.
  • Gabriella Ellixson was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will travel to Cazenovia on Tuesday afternoon for the first game of a three-game series with Cazenovia. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 PM start.
