SB: Wildcats Drop Two on Opening Day.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The SUNY Poly softball team lost both of their games on Sunday to open the season. The first was a 5-2 loss to Worcester State. The second was a 13-1 loss to Westminster. The Wildcats are now 0-2 this season. 

 

GAME 1:

SUNY Poly - 2

Worcester St. - 5

 

The opening game for the Wildcats all came down to one tough inning for SUNY Poly. After a scoreless first and second innings, the Wildcats allowed five runs in the third inning. The 'Cats battled back, cutting the deficit to three runs in the fourth inning, but it was not enough. 

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: 

  • Aeron Hamm had two RBIs for the Wildcats on a double in the fourth. She finished 1-3 on the day.

  • Amy DeSena was the lone Wildcat to record a multi-hit game. She had two singles and scored a run. 

  • Caitlin Reilly was the pitcher of record for the Wildcats. She allowed no earned runs and struck out three batters.

  • Jen Thornburn earned the win for Worcester. She threw seven innings and struck out eight batters.

  • The Worcester offense was balanced with four players recording an RBI and six players recording one hit.

 

GAME 2: 

SUNY Poly - 1

Westminster - 13

 

Game two ended in a mercy rule after a disastrous first inning. Westminster hung a nine spot on the scoreboard thanks to some big hits and an untimely error. The Wildcats were kept off the board by Elizabeth Malczak who allowed two hits and a run in four innings. 

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: 

  • Meghan Peek and Caitlin Reilly each had a single in the game. They were the only two hits of the game. 

  • Madi Hogan had an RBI in the third on a groundball to the shortstop. 

  • Joy Stevens was tagged with the loss for the Wildcats. 

  • Brooke Atkins had four hits and an RBI for Westminster. One of her hits was a double. 

  • Seven players recorded an RBI for Westminster. 

  • Mia Meholick had a game-high three RBI. She went 2-3 with a double and a run scored. 

 

UP NEXT: 

The Wildcats will play two games on Monday, March 14th. They will face Mt. Aloysius at 11:30 AM and UMass.-Boston at 3:30. Both games will be live streamed on the tournament web site.
