SB: Wildcats Fall 3-1 in Season Series With Delhi.

MARCY, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly softball team hosted a four-game series with SUNY Delhi this weekend, the first home series of 2021 for the Wildcats. The Wildcats split with the Broncos on day one, losing game one in extra innings, but bouncing back to win game two. Sunday did not go as well for the 'Cats. They dropped both games to the Broncos. The Wildcats are now 6-6 this season with a 5-5 North Atlantic Conference Record.

GAME 1: Wildcats 2, Broncos 4 (8 Innings)

Delhi opened up the scoring in game one on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the seventh, the Broncos would take a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Kwasnik that scored Katelynn Rose. SUNY Poly needed to tie it in the bottom of the last frame and did just that. An error in leftfield scored Ryan Fitzgerald and an RBI single by Ariel Smith tied the ball game. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the defense could not hold the lead, allowing the go-ahead run to score on a throwing error that scored Rachael Scoones. Delhi would add an insurance run on another error to seal the deal.

GAME NOTES:

  • Jordan Penoyer had two hits for the Wildcats. She went 2-4.

  • Ryan Fitzgerald had the lone extra-base hit for the Wildcats. She hit a double in the seventh inning.

  • Caitlin Reilly was on the losing end of the decision. She threw eight innings, struck out nine batters, and allowed just two earned runs.

GAME 2: Wildcats 3, Broncos 1

The Wildcats bounced back from the extra-innings loss to even the series up at 1-1 with a 3-1 win in game two. Delhi again opened up the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single to left field by Mackenzie Sparacino. SUNY Poly answered in the bottom of the second with three runs. Makayla Sweeting had an RBI single that drove in Ryan Fitzgerald in the inning. Ariel Smith also had an RBI single that drove home Sweeting. The Wildcat's third run was scored on an error. The pitching and defense took over from there. Neither team scored a run outside of the second inning. Jordan Penoyer earned the win in the circle for the Wildcats. She threw a complete game and allowed just six hits.

GAME NOTES:

  • Jordan Penoyer improved to 3-2 with the win on the mound. She also had a hit in three plate appearances.

  • Makayla Sweeting went 1-3 with an RBI.

  • Ariel Smith extended her hit streak to 10 games. She went 1-3 with an RBI.

GAME 3: Wildcats 1, Broncos 5

In-game three of the series, Delhi jumped out to a 4-0 lead. They scored three runs in the third and one run in the fourth. They added one more in the sixth for late-game insurance. Those runs would prove to be enough as the Wildcats would score just one run in the sixth, losing the game 5-1.

GAME NOTES:

  • Makayla Sweeting went 1-3 in the game with a double.

  • Aeron Hamm had the Wildcats lone RBI on her sixth-inning single. She was 1-2 with a walk.

  • Ryan Fitzgerald went 1-3 in the game.

  • Caitlin Reilly went seven innings for the Wildcats. She struck out four and allowed four earned runs. She also went 1-3 at the dish with a double.

Game 4: Wildcats 4, Broncos 5

In the last game of the series, the Wildcats made a push to tie up the series but came up short. Poly scored first with two runs in the bottom of the third. The first was driven in by Ariel Smith on an RBI single. The second was driven in by Aeron Hamm on an RBI double that drove in Smith. The fourth and fifth innings saw the Broncos score five unanswered runs to take the lead. Despite a run in the fifth and one in the seventh for the Wildcats, the Delhi lead held. The final score was 5-4 Delhi.

GAME NOTES:

  • Chalee Wratten went 2-3 for the Wildcats.

  • Ariel Smith went 2-4 with a double and an RBI.

  • Jordan Penoyer went 2-3 with a double and an RBI. She was the pitcher of record for the Wildcats. She threw seven innings, allowed no earned runs, and struck out three.
