SB: Wildcats Complete Season Sweep of Canton 8-0, 19-5.

CANTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly softball team completed the season sweep of SUNY Canton on Sunday with two North Atlantic Conference (NAC) wins. Both games were mercy rules with SUNY Poly winning game one 8-0 in five innings and game two 19-5 in five innings. The 19 run output was the Wildcat's offensive total this season. SUNY Poly is now 5-3 this season with a 4-2 record in the NAC.

GAME 1:

One big inning was all it took for the Wildcats to dominate in game one. That inning was the fourth where SUNY Poly extended a one-run lead to a seven-run lead. A bunt single by Aeron Hamm put the pressure on the Canton defense, causing a throwing error that scored Madison Ortiz. Ariel Smith drove home two on a double to right-center to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead. Caitlin Reilly extended the lead to seven runs with a three-run blast to left field. It was the first home run of her career. Reilly was also the winning pitcher in the game, throwing a complete game, four-hit shutout to improve to 3-1 on the year.

GAME NOTES

  • Caitlin Reilly had a monster game in the circle and at the plate. The freshman threw a complete game shutout. She allowed just four hits and struck out five. Reilly also went 2-3 at the plate with a double, a home run, and three RBIs.

  • Ariel Smith extended her season hit streak to seven games with a 2-4 performance. She had a double, a single, and two RBIs.

  • Makayla Sweeting also had a two-hit performance. She had two singles, drove in a run, and scored once.

GAME 2:

Game two looked like it was going to be a real offensive battle in the first inning. The Wildcats opened up the game with a two-run inning thanks to a two-RBI single by Jordan Penoyer. The Roos would answer back in the bottom of the first with a three-run inning of their own to take their first and only lead in the four-game series. SUNY Poly would regain the lead in the top of the second and never look back. A two-RBI double by Ariel Smith gave SUNY Poly a 4-3 lead and extended her season hit streak.  A pair of RBI singles by Leia Abbott and Ryan Fitzgerald extended the lead to 7-3, and a bases-loaded walk by Madison Ortiz extended the lead to five. The wheels really came off for Canton in the top of the fifth. They allowed a nine-run inning which marked the end of the series.

GAME NOTES:

  • Six Wildcats had multi-hit games.

  • SUNY Poly's team batting average in the game was .484.

  • Starting pitcher Jordan Penoyer was not only effective in the circle but had the most productive game of her career at the plate. The junior went 2-5 with a double and an astounding seven RBIs. The win on the mound was her second of the year.

  • Ariel Smith extended her hitting streak to eight games with a single in the top of the first. She went 3-5 with four RBIs and a double. She is still leading the Wildcats with a .645 batting average and has a team-best 17 RBIs.

  • Aside from Penoyer and Smith, four other Wildcats recorded multi-hit games. Aeron Hamm had two hits and an RBI, Chalee Wratten had two hits and scored twice, Leia Abbott went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Ryan Fitzgerald went 3-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

NEXT UP:

The Wildcats will host their first home series of the season with two doubleheaders against SUNY Delhi on Saturday, April 24th and Sunday, April 25th. Delhi comes into the game with a 9-5 overall record and a 7-5 record in NAC play.
