UTICA, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly Wildcats saw their first action back north on Wednesday. The trip across town did not go quite as planned for the Wildcats as they were beaten by the Utica College Pioneers 4-3 in the first game of the double header and 9-1 in the second.
The Wildcats and Pioneers played each other close in the first game. Fallon Reinold (Holland Patent, N.Y. / Holland Patent HS) took the mound for Poly in the first game and gave the Wildcats six solid innings of work. She struck out 10 Pioneers and did not walk a single batter.
Elizabeth Riegler (Boonville, N.Y. / Adirondack HS) hit her first homerun as a Wildcat in the game. The homerun came in the top of the fifth and drove in two runs to cut the Wildcat deficit to just two. Riegler went 2-3 in the game with the only extra base hit and had a hand in all three runs in the game, driving in two on the homerun and scoring in the seventh.
SUNY Poly made a push in the seventh; loading the bases with just one out. However the Utica pitching and defense managed to protect the two run lead, working their way out of the jam and allowing just one run to score.
Game two was not as close. The Utica College offense came to life in the second game, scoring in every inning of the game. The Pioneers had 13 hits in the game. Elizabeth Riegler led the way again for the Wildcats going 2-2 with a double and driving in the lone run. The game ended in the bottom of the fifth due to the run rule.
The two losses for the Wildcats drop their record to 4-6 on the season. The team will look to rebound next week when they travel to Oswego to take on the Lakers in a double header. Game one is scheduled for a 3:30 PM start.
