Wildcat Offense Shines in 84-70 Victory at Wilson

MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The SUNY Poly Men's Basketball Team (3-9, 2-2 NEAC) shot 53% from the field in Saturday's 84-70 victory over the Wilson College Phoenix (3-6, 2-3 NEAC). The game marked one of the Wildcat's best shooting performances of the year as the team evened its conference record at 2-2.

Forward Kaleel Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y. / Syr. Acad. of Science) had a lot to do with the Wildcat's offensive prowess. The 6-3 junior had his best game of the year, scoring a season-high 22 points while pulling down 12 rebounds to give him a double-double. Johnson went 10 of 17 from the field, and even added a team-high 2 blocks on the defensive end.

Four of the Wildcats five starters scored in double-figures on the day. Maverick Hodge (Bronx, N.Y. / Samuel Gompers) scored 16 points on an efficient 7 for 12 from the floor, and continues to rebound well out of the guard position as he picked up 9 boards, second only to Johnson's 12.

Guard Ryan McCarthy (Camden, N.Y. / Camden) added 13 points on 3-6 from long range, and disrupted the Phoenix attack on the other end with a team-high 4 steals.

Finally, second-semester additon Michael Boyea (Chateaugay, N.Y. / Chateaugay) seemed to find his sea legs. Playing in just his second game, Boyea scored 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting, playing 35 minutes.

The Wildcats actually placed five players in double-figures with Thomas Lucas coming off the bench to score 10 in 23 minutes of game time. The Phoenix surprisingly put 5 players in double-figures as well, generally unusual for a team that lost by 14 points. SUNY Poly held the home team to 41% shooting on the game, however, and enjoyed a whopping 47 to 28 advantage in rebounds on the night.

Zach Gasper led the Phoenix in points, coming off the bench to score 14. Gasper was deadly, making 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range and knocking down both of his free throw attempts. Gasper, however, was the only player in the Phoenix lineup to shoot better than 50% for the game.

The Wildcats will head next to Washington, D.C., for a contest with Gallaudet University tomorrow afternoon. Game time is slated for 3:00 pm to follow the women's game.
