POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Volleyball Team (1-3, 0-0 NEAC) picked up its first official victory of the year Friday night, defeating the host team Potsdam State at the Victory Promotions Invitational, 3 to 1. Prior to that match, SUNYIT swept Canadian college Cegepe Andre Laundeau, 3-0, in an exhibition.
The victory over SUNY Potsdam also marked the first career victory for first-year Wildcat Head Coach Dan Liberto.
SUNYIT swept the exhibition match 25-22, 25-12, 25-22. Freshman Megan Will had a great match, registering 7 kills on 10 attempts without committing a single error. The 5-foot-8 middle from Remsen, N.Y., also recorded 7 assisted-blocks. Sophomore right-side Emma Larson was also active around the net with 7 total blocks.
The exhibition match does not count from a statistical standpoint and will not be added to SUNYIT's overall record.
In the nightcap SUNYIT had a rematch with the Bears of Potsdam St., who defeated the Wildcats in a 5-set thriller at a tournament last weekend. This time SUNYIT had the better of play, battling to a 4-set win, 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23).
Will had another big match, churning out 12 kills and 5 total blocks, while first-time-starter Becca Sheely had her best match of the year with 33 assists. Larson added 11 kills and 15 digs, and athletic outside-hitter Morgan Eberley seemed to be adjusting to her new position well with 7 kills, 4 aces, and 10 digs.
The Wildcats continue the VPI Invite on Saturday with an 11:00 am match against SUNY Plattsburgh (and former Wildcat Head Coach Jake Bluhm), followed by a 2:30 pm match at St. Lawrence.
