Strang Helps Women's Soccer Get Past Gallaudet

UTICA, NY – SUNYIT freshman Kristina Strang (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) scored both of the Lady Wildcats' goals on the day to help lead her squad to a 2-1 victory over their newest NEAC rival Gallaudet University at the Wildcat Soccer Field Sunday.  The victory helped the Wildcats remain undefeated in the NEAC at 7-0 and placed them at 8-3 overall, while Gallaudet fell to 1-4 in conference play and 3-7 overall.

Strang gave SUNYIT an early 1-0 lead when she scored an unassisted goal just over two minutes into the contest, which would be the only score for either team in the first half.  Strang would then score what would prove to be the game-winning goal at the 66-minute mark off an assist from freshman Jamie Elderbroom (Chittenango, NY/Chittengano)

Gallaudet would keep it close with a goal from Lauren Hostovsky 10 minutes later, but it wasn't enough as SUNYIT held on for the victory.

SUNYIT freshman goalie Margaret Werenczak (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) made three saves in 52 minutes of action to register the win, while Kara Gulvas stopped seven shots for Gallaudet.

"We came out on fire scoring in the first few minutes, but then played flat for the majority of the remaining time left in the match," explained head coach Tyler Renaud.  "Kristina did very well on both of her finishes and, if not for a few offensive and defensive miscues, I believe we could have put the game away earlier."

"I am still getting everyone playing time for the home stretch of our conference slate to see what they can do in pressure situations," Renaud continued.  "We are experiencing the difficulties associated with playing in two successive days and really need to be sharp for the second day's matches, and I am confident the girls will learn from their level of play today.  The most important thing is we got the win."

The Wildcats have now won two straight contests and will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday, October 9 when they host conference foe Wells College.  Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
