Women's Soccer Captures D'Youville Tournament Championship

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT women's soccer team captured the D'Youville College Labor Day Tournament Championship this past weekend by defeating SUNY Canton 4-0 on Saturday and D'Youville 2-0 on Sunday.

The Lady Wildcats rolled through Canton, holding the Kangaroos to just four shots on goal while firing off 11 of their own.  Junior Nicole DiNitto (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) put SUNYIT on the board in the first half with a goal at the 28-minute mark off an assist from senior Jane Burroughs (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville).  The Wildcats would then add three more goals late in the second half, with Burroughs scoring at 72:39, followed by a goal from sophomore Amanda Myers (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) six minutes later and another from junior Kelley Waskiewicz (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) at the 83-minute mark.  Myers also added two assists on the day.

"We were real sluggish in the first half, but we went against the wind in the second half and did a real nice job of playing the width of field and working the ball down the sidelines to give us scoring opportunities," said head coach Tyler Renaud.  "I was very happy with the result."

In the tournament championship, SUNYIT and D'Youville held each other scoreless until freshman Kristina Strang (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) scored the first goal of her collegiate career at the 67-minute mark off an assist from fellow classmate Amanda Bohne (Clay, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse).  SUNYIT would seal the win nine minutes later with a goal from DiNitto off an assist from Strang, who took home the Offensive Player of the Tournament award.  Freshman Aubrey Campbell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) held D'Youville scoreless with 11 saves in 90 minutes of action and earned the Defensive Player of the Tournament award.

"I'm very pleased to be 2-0 at the beginning of the season," said Renaud.  "Hopefully we can continue this trend for the rest of the year and continue to put together a solid 90 minutes of play in each game."

The Wildcats will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow when they host local rival Utica College at the Wildcat Soccer Field.  The match is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
