Women's Soccer Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Wells

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT women's soccer team scored all four its goals in the second half to defeat NEAC rival Wells College 4-3 at the Wildcat Soccer Field Saturday, keeping the Lady Wildcats undefeated in conference play at 8-0 and placing them at 10-3 overall.  The loss dropped Wells to 2-4 in the NEAC and 2-9-1 overall.

Despite outshooting Wells 14-2 in the first half, SUNYIT found itself down 1-0 at intermission after Wells junior Alanna Verderber scored an unassisted goal at the 24-minute mark, which would be the only score of the half.

SUNYIT continued to stay aggressive offensively in the second half, again outshooting Wells 17-3.  The Wildcats would tie the game 10 minutes into the second half when freshman Amanda Bohne (Clay, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) found the back of the net on assists from seniors Cassandra Moss (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) and Lauryne Zinter (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater), while Moss would then give SUNYIT the lead five minutes later on an unassisted goal at 59:50.  Two consecutive goals by junior Kelley Waskiewicz (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) at the 78-minute mark and 80-minute mark, respectively, would give the Wildcats a commanding 4-1 lead.

Wells kept it close, however, as Hillary Setford scored at 86:16 and Rachel Mattraw added a goal on a free kick three minutes later to put the score at 4-3, but SUNYIT would kill the last minute of play and secure the victory.

"Our reserves won this game for us," said head coach Tyler Renaud.  "Kelley Waskiewicz and Amanda Bohne were the catalyst to our second half surge.  (Sophomore) Mirsada Velic (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) also contributed through her continuous hustle all over the middle of the field.  If we continue to play in this fashion for the first 45 minutes, it is going to make for a trying end to the season."

SUNYIT freshman goalie Aubrey Campbell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) made two saves and allowed one goal in 84 minutes of action to pick up the victory, while Megan Lawrence made 12 saves for Wells.

The Wildcats have now won four straight contests.  They will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to take on conference foe SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, October 16.  Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
