WLAX: Wildcats Bounce Back for Win Over Maine Maritime.

Utica. N.Y - The SUNY Poly women's lacrosse team got back in the win column, defeating the Maine Maritime Mariners by a score of 16-12. Katie Kopcza continued her dominant 2024 campaign, scoring six goals on 11 shots. Wildcat goalie, Jayden Brown stopped 15 of the 27 shots thrown her way, picking up her third win of the season. The Wildcats are now 4-6 on the season as they look ahead to another conference matchup with the Morrisville State Mustangs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Micheala Johnson put the Wildcats on the board first, scoring off of a free position shot with 8 minutes left in the first quarter. Kaitlin Kopcza and Katelynn Truax would also score in the quarter, but not before Maine Maritime added a couple goals of their own. The Wildcats were holding on to a slim 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.

Goals were plenty in the second quarter, beginning with a Mariner goal less than 10 seconds in. Behind two more goals, a piece from Kaitlin Kopcza and Micheala Johnson, SUNY Poly would build themselves an 8-6 lead by the end of the half.

Micheala Johnson and Kaitlin Kopcza would continue to cause problems for the Mariners, scoring all of the Wildcat goals in the third quarter. Maine Maritime fought hard, scoring three goals of their own in the quarter, but would still be trailing by two heading into the fourth.

Kaitlin Kopcza scored her sixth and final goal of the game early in the fourth quarter, giving the Wildcats a 12-9 lead. A couple of goals from the Mariners cut the lead to only one, but that would be as close as Maine Maritime would get. SUNY Poly would go on to score four of the next five goals, closing out the game on top by a score of 16-12.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
