Hot Start Fizzles for Wildcats in Tough Loss to SUNY-Canton

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Lacrosse Team (0-4, 0-0 NEAC) fell to SUNY Canton (3-3) on Wednesday evening, 17-8 at home. After scoring the first three goals of the game, the Wildcats watched as the Roos stormed back to take an 8-4 lead at the half.

Things looked good early for the Wildcats as Jenna Lashua (Heuvelton, N.Y. / Heuvelton) scored the game's first goal on an assist by Ana Exposto (Lisbon, Portugal / Amer. Int'l School of Mozambique). Exposto would follow it up in the game's 4th minute with a score of her own, putting the Wildcats up 3-0.

Unfortunately for SUNYIT, it was at that point that the Roos three youngsters Megan Poupore, Keeley Rice, and Tressa Goolden decided to take over. The trio of two first-years and a sophomore (respectively) combined for 11 goals on the game, with Poupore scoring the Roos first goal at the 23:51 mark in the first half on an assist by Rice.

In fact, in the first half the three Roos combined to score all 8 of SUNY Canton's goals.

One bright spot in the loss for the Wildcats was the play of first-year Laura Tolbert (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse). The diminutive defender exploded for 4 goals to lead all scorers. SUNYIT's 8 goals was the team's highest total of the young season, and Tolbert's 4 scores are an individual high for the Wildcats thus far.

The Wildcats will be off for the rest of the month before opening April at Utica College. The Wildcats are set to take on the Pioneers at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 2nd.
