Women's Basketball Wins Second Straight with 85-55 Victory over Wilson

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT women's basketball team had 10 different student-athletes score at least one point en route to a lopsided 85-55 victory over the visiting Wilson College Phoenix Wednesday afternoon.  The Lady Wildcats are now 1-0 in the NEAC and 2-0 overall, while Wilson dropped to 1-2 in conference play and 2-2 overall.

The Wildcats dominated the contest, quickly building a 10-point lead 10 minutes into the game and more than doubling that by halftime, rolling into the break with a 23-point lead, 49-26.  The second half was much of the same, with the Wildcats building their lead to as much as 35 points before eventually picking up the 30-point victory.

SUNYIT shot 49 percent from the field and nailed 6-of-11 3-pointers on the day.  The team's defense also came through for the second straight game, holding Wilson to 35 percent shooting and forcing 21 turnovers while registering 14 steals and seven blocks as a team.

Senior Tamara Williams (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) led the way with 15 points, six rebounds and a game-high four blocks.  Sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) went 6-of-7 from the field and finished with 14 points, while senior Taylor Topping (Bronx, NY/Preston) registered 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.  Junior Kwanisha Jones (San Antonio, TX/Indian River) dished out a game-high 10 assists and Sarah Couvillon (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds to go along with nine points, three assists and two blocks.

Freshman Vanessa Whitfield scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Wilson, while sophomore Tara Fields finished with 13 points and five assists.

The Wildcats will look to continue their winning ways on Thursday, December 2 when they travel to take on local rival Utica College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
