Wildcats drop two close ones against St. Lawrence Saints.

Canton, N.Y - The SUNY Poly women's softball team dropped two close games to the St. Lawrence Saints. Trinity Critelli took the mound in the first game, allowing six runs on 10 hits. The Wildcats struggled to find a big hit, as they left seven runners on base. In game two,  Wildcats Joy Stevens was on the bump, where she allowed two runs on 12 hits. SUNY Poly would lead for much of the game, until the bottom of the 8th inning, when the Saints would walk it off on an error. The Wildcats are now 10-4 on the season. 


GAME 1: 

Game one remained scoreless up until the third inning, when Saints shortstop, Vivian Johnson plated two runs on a double to the left center field gap. An impressive play in right field from Wildcat Ariel Bell, followed by a popup to shortstop Amy DeSena would strand two Saints runners. 

Kimberly Birmingham would get things going for the Wildcats in the top of the fourth, roping her second double of the game. Birmingham would later score on a Jadyn Childers single. 

The Wildcats would score another in the top of the fifth, thanks to an RBI single from Amy Desena. 

The Wildcats would not score another run the rest of the game, while the Saints would add a few more insurance runs in the late innings. The Wildcats would fall by a score of 6-2.

GAME 2: 

Another double from Wildcat Kimberly Birmingham would give SUNY Poly the early lead in game two. A wild pitch followed by a passed ball would give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead after the first inning. 

The score remained that way up until the fourth inning, when the Saints would bring home three runs of their own to tie the score. 

SUNY Poly would regain the lead in the top of the seventh, when pitcher Joy Stevens drove in DeSena with a double to right center. 

St. Lawrence played spoiler in the bottom of the inning, scoring one to tie the game and force extra innings. 

A passed ball and a groundout would allow Kelly Powell to score in extra innings, giving the Wildcats a 5-4 lead. 

In the bottom of the eight, the St. Lawrence Saints would walk it off on an error. SUNY Poly would lose the second game of the day by a score of 6-5. 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: 

  • Joy Stevens only allowed two runs in 7.2 innings, while at the plate adding one RBI on two hits. 
  • Ariel Bell went 2-4 on the day.
  • Amy DeSena went 2-3 and scored two runs.
