SB: Wildcats Beaten by Berks in NEAC Play.

CLINTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly softball team was beaten twice in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on Saturday 12-1 and 8-0 by Penn State Berks. The Wildcat offense struggled to get going in the games, managing only six hits as a team. The Wildcats are now 8-14 this season with a 5-5 NEAC record.

 

GAME ONE:

Berks got out to an early lead scoring three runs in the second inning and nine runs in the top of the third. The Wildcats would score one run in the bottom of the third but that would be it for the scoring in the game. Berks would win in five innings thanks to an eight-run mercy rule. The final score of the game was 12-1

 

MILESTONE REACHED:

Melissa Barber (Nassau, N.Y.) entered the doubleheader with 99 combined career hits. She got her 100th hit in the bottom of the third inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Barber is the second Wildcat this season to reach the 100 hit mark. 56 of her hits were during her time at Alfred State. Barber has a career batting average of .331 at SUNY Poly with 47 hits in 142 at-bats. Her career on-base percentage is .398 and her career slugging percentage is .394.

 

NOTABLES:

  • Bailee Haddad (Frankfort, N.Y.) was the only Wildcat with multiple hits in the game. She also had the only RBI and the only extra base hit for the Wildcats.

  • Kayla Maiolo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the pitcher of record for the Wildcats. She is now 4-6 this season.

  • Hunter Hart went 2-2 with a game-high three RBIs in the game for Berks.

  • The Nittany Lions had four batters with multiple hits in the game and had five batters with multiple RBIs.

  • Jess Rozick earned the win for Berks. She is now 8-4 this season

 

GAME TWO:

Game two was similar to game one in that Berks got out to an early lead scoring four runs in the top of the second inning. The Nittany Lions would add two more in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fourth to take an eight-run lead into the fifth. The Wildcats would not score in their bottom half of the fifth inning leading to another eight-run mercy rule in five innings.

 

NOTABLES:

  • Melissa Barber recorded the lone hit of the game for the Wildcats. She went 1-2.

  • Hayley Breeyear (Fort Edward, N.Y.) was the losing pitcher for SUNY Poly.

  • Heather Rissell had two hits in the game for Berks including a double. She also had an RBI.

  • Amaya Phillips hit a home run in the game and had three RBIs for the Nittany Lions.

  • Val Miller earned her eighth win of the season on the mound for Berks. She threw five innings, allowed one hit, and struck out two batters.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will be back in action on Sunday, April 14th against Penn State Abington. The NEAC doubleheader is scheduled for a 9:30 AM start at Hamilton College.
