Walk-off Single by Serglin Proples Wildcats to 8-7 Victory over Gordon; SUNYIT Finishes Day 1-1

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –Outfielder and true freshman Leah Serglin (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Shroeder) provided some late-inning heroics to give SUNYIT a thrilling 8-7 win over Gordon on Tuesday afternoon. The 5-foot-6 centerfielder singled with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning, scoring Erika Charbonneau (Boonville, N.Y. / Adirondack) from second base for the win. The play was a classic example of the type of redemption possible in softball and baseball, as Serglin had been held hitless in three at-bats prior to her game-winning hit.

Top returning player Krista Pristera (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford) continued to hit everything in sight, finishing the game 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI's. Pristera is 8-for-13 through four games and is slugging an unconscionable 1.000.

The Wildcats seemed headed for a blowout after hanging four runs in the bottom of the first inning, followed by three in the 4th to take a 7-2 lead, but Gordon hung around, scoring three in the fifth and then stunning the Wildcats with two runs in the top of the 7th to tie the game.

In the morning game, the Wildcats were shut down by Arcadia, 5-2, behind a stellar pitching performance from Sarah Gunia. Gunia went the distance, surrendering just 4 hits in her seven innings of work while striking out 6 and walking none. Neither of the two runs Gunia gave up were earned.

SUNYIT continues to get in as much softball as possible down south, with another doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday. The Wildcats will take on Ursinus College at 9:30 am, followed by Bemidji State University at 11:30 am.
