Wildcats Fall to Lakers in Home-Opener

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Softball Team (10-8, 4-2 NEAC) fell to the visiting Oswego State Lakers (9-13) on Thursday, 7-4 in game one followed by a 4-2 loss in game two. Recaps are below:

GAME 1…Oswego State 7, SUNYIT 4

The Lakers used a 4-run sixth inning to snatch a one-run lead away from the home Wildcats in game one of Thursday's doubleheader at SUNYIT. Designated player Brooke Radley hit a two-run homer over the right field wall to get things started, and shortstop Marietta Silliman doubled home two more to give the Lakers the 7-4 win.

SUNYIT hurler Erica Hovey (Dexter, N.Y. / Jefferson CC) went 5 and 2/3 innings in the loss, while Bridget Ashmore (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford) finished things up for the Wildcats, throwing 1 and 1/3 scoreless. At the plate it was Krista Pristera (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford) and Fallon Reinold (Holland Patent, N.Y. / Holland Patent) leading in hits, as each went 2-for-4 on the day, with Reinold adding a run scored. Pristera was also deft in the field, making a diving catch on a short pop-up in the top of the 3rd inning.

On the Laker side it was Alexandria Connelly providing 3 and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win, while Tori Trovato, Nicole Ouellette, and Silliman each registered multiple-hit games.

GAME 2…Oswego State 4, SUNYIT 2

In the nightcap the Lakers struck early, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning on an RBI-base hit from Trovato, and for 6 innings it appeared it might be all the Lakers would need, as game two starter Sarah Thayer was near perfect through the first six innings, surrendering no runs and just one hit.

The third basemen in the game were on their toes, and had to be as Krista Pristera for the Wildcats and Dee Apps for the Lakers both made great plays on the day to help keep things close. Most notably, the two fielded hotshot line drives in the 4th and 5th innings. Pristera's quick reactions turned a potential Katie Bredin double into the second out of the 4th inning, while Apps's quick hands robbed Alison Short (Port Byron, N.Y. / Cayuga CC) of a potential lead-off double in the top of the 5th.

Once again, however, the top of the 6th proved costly for the Wildcats, as the Lakers got to game two starting pitcher Fallon Reinold for three runs on three hits, and once again it was Radley supplying the bulk of the firepower with a pinch-hit, 2-RBI double off the centerfield fence.

SUNYIT mounted a comeback in the bottom of the 7th, getting to Thayer for two hits and a run, but ultimately the hard-throwing righty was too much for SUNYIT.

SUNYIT will be back in action this Saturday, as they hit the road for a doubleheader with Wells. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm.
