Brognano Selected as NEAC Softball Student-Athlete of Week

UTICA, NY – SUNYIT sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) has been selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 10.

Brognano was sensational during a record-breaking week for the Lady Wildcats to help them go 6-2 in conference play during that time frame.  The 5-foot-5 shortstop finished the week with an incredible stat line of 19 RBI, 16 runs scored, four home runs and four doubles while finishing 15-for-32 at the plate and registering a hitting percentage of .452, a slugging percentage of .969 and an on base percentage of .500.  The week was highlighted with Brognano tying her own program record for runs batted in during one game with seven in a win over SUNY Cobleskill Thursday, where she hit a grand slam and another three-run homer that both came during a 14-run fourth inning for SUNYIT.  The run total was a historic feat, as it is in a six-way tie for the eighth-most ever in one inning, according to the NCAA Division III softball record books.  Additionally, Brognano would again help the Lady Wildcats make history with a home run, three RBI and five runs scored during SUNYIT's program-record 30-run outing against Wells this past Saturday, where the squad also had a program-best 28 RBI.

Brognano, who finished last season as the national leader in runs per game, is currently second in the nation in that category while being fifth in doubles per game.  She is batting .452 on the year and leads the team in runs scored (30), home runs (4), doubles (10), slugging percentage (.806) and fielding assists (26), while being second in hits (28), RBI (21) and walks drawn (7).

The Wildcats are currently 10-2 in the NEAC North and 14-5 overall.  They will be back in action today when they host local rival Utica College at 3:30 pm.  Although the contest is considered a home game for the Lady Wildcats, it is scheduled to be played at Utica's Greenman Field, which, along with Herkimer County Community College's Generals Field, will be the site of all SUNYIT home games this season due to both the on-campus construction of the $20 million field house and renovations to the current Wildcat Softball Field.
