MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The SUNYIT softball team broke the program records for hits, runs batted in and runs scored in a game with a 24-3 victory over Southern Vermont College Tuesday during day two of the Snowbird Tournament, which is being held this week in Myrtle Beach, SC.  The Wildcats are now 2-1 on the year.

SUNYIT finished the day with 24 RBI on 27 hits, which broke the record of 21 RBI on 21 hits that were both set in the same game last season, while the 24 runs scored broke the team's previous record of 23 runs that was accomplished during the 1998 season. 

The Wildcats opened the game with a 12-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by senior Meaghan McGurn (Slingerlands, NY/Hudson Valley CC) and three RBI apiece from juniors Bianca Brown (Utica, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) and Kim Tarasek (Lowville, NY/Lowville).  Nine more runs were scored on nine hits in the second inning and three more runs came in the third, with the record-breaking score coming when Nicolette Kennedy (Yonkers, NY/Good Counsel Academy) crossed the plate after smashing a two-run homer over the right field fence.

Brown, McGurn and Kennedy all finished with four RBI, while Tarasek drove in three runs and scored three more.  McGurn also picked up the win on the mound with three strikeouts in two innings of work, while Brown struck out five in three innings of relief.

Sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) went 3-for-6 at the plate with four runs scored and one RBI.

Sara Simonetti went 2-for-3 and drove in all three runs for Southern Vermont, while Alyssa Davis stole two bases and scored a run.

The Wildcats also picked up an 8-0 victory over Penn State Harrisburg in their second game of the day.  Stats are not yet available for that contest, but check back soon for a full recap.

Day three of the Snowbird Tournament will see the Wildcats take on Penn College at 9:00 am and Bluefield College at 11:00 am.
