MLAX: Wildcats Prevail in Back-and-Forth Thriller Against the Broncos

UTICA, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's lacrosse team won a tightly contested battle against the SUNY Delhi Broncos by a score of 8-7. Wildcat goalie Joseph VanZandt picked up his first win on the season after stopping 14 of Delhi's 21 shots in the game. SUNY Poly would have six different players find the back of the net, capped off by a game winning goal from Luke Taylor in the final minute of the fourth period. The Wildcats would win 8-7, lifting their record to 4-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first quarter was a goalie showcase, as neither would let one get past them in the first 15 minutes. Wildcats Joseph VanZandt pushed away five shots, While SUNY Delhi goalie Mike Triolo stopped both shots he faced.

Both offenses were able to get on the board in the second, beginning with a man up goal from Wildcat Payton Thomas. SUNY Poly would soon take a 2-0 lead, thanks to Lyle Beeman. SUNY Poly would stay ahead by two goals for the next eight minutes of the quarter, until Bronco Chris Lazazzaro would zip one past VanZandt to give SUNY Delhi their first goal of the game. Delhi would add one more goal with 40 seconds on the clock, evening the game up at 2-2 before halftime.

While up a man, SUNY Delhi would take the lead early in the third quarter off a goal from Benjamin Moscatiello. Just over a minute after the Delhi goal, SUNY Poly would tie the game back up at 3-3 thanks to a goal from Sultan Taj. With a minute left in the third quarter, Luke Taylor would score his first of the day to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead.

Wildcat Michael Baker would give SUNY Poly a two goal lead early in the fourth quarter. Additional goals from Ian Short helped keep the Wildcats ahead of the Broncos for the majority of the quarter. The Broncos did not go away easy, however, matching the Wildcats every goal, and eventually tying the game at 7-7 with just over two minutes left in the period. After an intense back-and-forth sequence of plays, Luke Taylor would play hero, scoring what would become the game winning goal with only 44 seconds left. A final save from VanZandt would secure a thrilling 8-7 victory for the SUNY Poly Wildcats.
