MLAX: Wildcats Wrap-up Regular Season With a 10-8 Win Over Cobleskill on Senior Day.

UTICA, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly Wildcats defeated the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers 10-8 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game. The Wildcats improved their record to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), while the Fighting Tigers fell to 8-5 overall and 3-5 in the NAC. Before the game, the Wildcats celebrated the careers of their seven seniors with a Senior Day ceremony. The seven seniors from this year's team are; Dillon May, Andrew Maycock, Christopher Naldini, Ryan Possidel, James Rosaschi, Steven Sullivan, and Bennett Smith.  

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

SUNY Poly led 2-0 early in the first quarter on goals by Luke Taylor and Lyle Beeman. SUNY Cobleskill finished the quarter strong, scoring three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead.  

 

The two teams traded goals in the second quarter, but Cobleskill scored first and last, to grow their one-goal lead to two at halftime.  

 

In the third quarter, SUNY Poly scored two unanswered goals, both scored by Griffin LaFleur to tie the game at seven. 

 

In the fourth quarter, SUNY Poly scored two unanswered goals to take a 9-7 lead with eight minutes to play. The Fighting Tigers answered with a goal of their own to pull within one, but Payton Thomas scored an insurance goal with 2:30 to play that ultimately closed the door on the game.  

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Payton Thomas had a game-high four goals for the Wildcats. He also had a caused turnover and a pair of ground balls.  

  • Luke Taylor had four points on two goals and two assists. He also caused two turnovers. 

  • Joshua Cargen had a phenomenal defensive game for the Wildcats. He caused eight turnovers and had 10 ground balls. The eight CTs are a career-high. The 10 groundballs match his season-high.  

  • Lyle Beeman and Griffin LaFleur each scored two goals for Poly.  

  • Spencer Nixon caused three turnovers for the Wildcats.  

  • Dillon May went 12-21 on faceoffs and had seven ground balls for SUNY Poly.  

  • Ryan Possidel earned his first win in goal for the Wildcats. He made nine saves.  

  • Sean D'Amaro had a pair of goals and a pair of assists for Cobleskill.  

  • William Bockhaus had a game-high three assists and a goal for the Fighting Tigers.  

  • Kerry Blackwood and Gregory Neuman each had three points for Cobleskill. Blackwood had a goal and two assists. Neuman had two goals and an assist.  

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats clinched the #2 spot in the NAC Postseason and will take on the #3 seed SUNY Delhi in the first round of the NAC Championship Tournament. The game date and time will be announced early next week once the seedings have been finalized.
