MLAX: Wildcats Improve to 7-1 in NAC Play With a 9-5 Win Over SUNY Delhi.

DELHI, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's lacrosse team earned a pivotal win over SUNY Delhi in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon 9-5. With the win, the Wildcats are now in sole possession of second place in the NAC with a 7-1 record.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Poly scored the first three goals of the game, with Griffin LaFleur, Lyle Beeman, and Luke Taylor finding the back of the net. SUNY Delhi responded with a goal from Jack McClurg to cut the deficit, but SUNY Poly held a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

 

In the second quarter, SUNY Delhi's Beachak opened scoring to cut the Wildcat lead to one, but SUNY Poly's Payton Thomas and Andrew Maycock each scored a goal, giving SUNY Poly a 5-2 at the half.

 

SUNY Poly continued to control the game in the third quarter. Michael Baker scored a goal less than a minute into the half to extend the lead to four goals. SUNY Delhi responded with goals from Brandon McGrath and Jagger Beachak, but SUNY Poly still had a 6-4 lead at the end of the third quarter.

 

SUNY Poly pulled away in the fourth quarter. Griffing LaFleur scored twice and Lyle Beeman scored once on a 3-0 run by the Wildcats to start the fourth. The run gave the Wildcats a five-goal lead. Jagger Beachak scored his third goal of the game with !:44 left in the game, but it was too little, too late, as SUNY Poly secured the 9-5 victory.

 

Joseph VanZandt was awesome in goal for the Wildcats. He made 20 saves on 25 shots faced to lead the Wildcats to their ninth win of the season.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Griffin LaFleur led the Wildcats with three goals and one assist
  • Lyle Beeman contributed two goals, two caused turnovers, and three ground balls for Poly.
  • Luke Taylor had a goal, two assists, three ground balls, and a caused turnover.  
  • Payton Thomas and Andrew Maycock each scored a goal and an assist.
  • Michael Baker also scored a goal for SUNY Poly.
  • Joshua Cargen had a team-high three caused turnovers and a team-high six ground balls.
  • Jagger Beachak had three goals for Delhi.
  • Jack McClurg and Brandon McGrath each scored one goal for SUNY Delhi
  • Anthony Durrant, Kyle Brogan, and Jackson Murphy each had an assist for the Broncos.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will host SUNY Cobleskill in the regular season finale on Saturday, May 29th. The Wildcats will hold their annual Senior Day Celebration prior to the game. The contest is scheduled for a 3:30 PM start at SUNY Poly's Wildcat Field.
