MLAX: Late Push by Maine Maritime Hands Poly First Loss in NAC Play.

UTICA, N.Y. – SUNY Poly men's lacrosse lost to Maine Maritime on Friday 14-11 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's lacrosse game at Wildcat Field. The game was tied late, but the Mariners scored twice on man-down opportunities late in the game to pull away at the end. SUNY Poly is now 6-4 this season with a 4-1 record in NAC play.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The game started off in Poly's favor with a 4-0 run. Maritime scored three unanswered to pull within one. Both teams scored a goal to wrap up the first quarter with a 5-4 score.

 

Maine Maritime outscored the Wildcats 3-2 in the second to tie it 7-7 at halftime.

 

The teams traded goals in the third quarter, two a-piece, ending it in a 9-9 tie.

 

Maine Maritime took their first lead of the game, 10-9, with 10 minutes to play in the fourth. Maritime outscored Poly 4-1 down the stretch, including a pair of man-down goals to earn the win.

 

Maine Maritime's goalie, Garrett Ruszkowski, made 13 saves, while SUNY Poly's goalie, Joseph VanZandt, made 14 saves.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Maine Maritime's Jacob Hintermaier led the game in scoring with four goals and one assist.
  • Brendan Reddington also had a strong game for Maine Maritime, recording three goals and one assist.
  • Jayden Wilson contributed two goals and one assist for Maine Maritime.
  • For SUNY Poly, Luke Taylor and Andrew Maycock both had four points. Taylor had three goals and an assist. Maycock had two goals and two assists.
  • Payton Thomas recorded two goals and two assists for SUNY Poly as well.
  • Griffin LaFleur had three points for Poly with a pair of goals and an assist.
  • Steven Sullivan had a game-high four caused turnovers for the Wildcats.
  • The faceoff battle between Dillon May and Jed Astbury was evenly matched. Astbury held a one-win edge (15-29) and had the groundball advantage (8-5).
  • Will Arnone had a team-high three caused turnovers and six groundballs for the Mariners.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will continue their NAC schedule on Sunday, April 16th. They will host Husson University at Wildcat Field. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start and will be streamed live on the SUNY Poly Sports Network (SPSN).
