MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly men's lacrosse team earned their first win of 2019 on Thursday in a 13-6 win over the Houghton College Highlanders. The Wildcats controlled the flow of the game, winning 70% of their face-offs, scoring on 30% of their shots taken, and assisting on nine of their 13 goals. SUNY Poly also had an edge on defense, forcing 16 turnovers and scooping up 49 ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Wildcats jumped out to a lead seven seconds into the first quarter. Ryan Mead (Churchville, N.Y.) won his first faceoff of the game, picked up the ground ball and found a cutting Noah Garrett (New Hartford, N.Y.) who gave the Wildcats the lead that would ultimately last the rest of the game. SUNY Poly would score two more unanswered goals in the quarter before Houghton got on the board. The Wildcat lead would grow to 6-1 in the second, but the Highlanders cut that lead down to two goals before hitting the locker room for halftime. The Wildcats finished the game on a high note, ending on a 7-2 scoring run that sealed up the win.
NOTABLES:
- Daniel Rivie (Ossining, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with a game high five goals on just six shots. The senior also had two assists, five ground balls, and a caused turnover.
- Noah Garrett had a career high four goals and an assist, finishing with a career high six points. Noah also had two ground balls.
- Freshman Shane Wyman (East Greenbush, N.Y.) had three points in his first game as a Wildcat. He scored two goals and dished out an assist.
- Samuel Rubin (Goshen, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season in goal for the Wildcats. He made eight saves on 14 shots.
- Ryan Mead had a big day in the faceoff circle. The sophomore went a dominant 13-16 for a faceoff percentage of 81%. Mead also had an assist and six ground balls.
- Edward Rosaschi (Highland Mills, N.Y.) had a game high nine ground balls in the game. The junior also had a goal, an assist, and a caused turnover.
- Four Wildcats had two caused turnovers in the game.
- Thomas Woodward had a game high five caused turnovers for Houghton.
- Jonathan Mayer had a team high three goals for the Highlanders on nine shots. He also had a ground ball.
- Cole Chapman had two goals for Houghton.
