Wildcats Drop Season Opener to Alfred 20-2

MARCY N.Y. – The SUNYIT men's lacrosse team saw its first action of the 2013 season Saturday against the Alfred University Saxons in Alfred N.Y. The Wildcats were defeated by a final score of 20-2.

The Wildcats got off to a good start, scoring a goal in the first thirty seconds of the game on an unassisted goal by Kevin Gardrvits. But the good start was not good enough as Alfred went on a 20-0 run in over the next 59 minutes that put the Wildcats down and out. The Wildcats did score another goal with just 42 seconds remaining. The second goal for the Wildcats was also the second unassisted goal for Kevin Gardrvits on the day.

The Saxons were better in almost every category, the exception being saves. SUNYIT goalie Jeffery Melnik recorded 25 saves in the game, but that was not enough to slow down the Alfred shooters who overwhelmed the defense and put 45 shots on goal compared to 4 SOG by the Wildcats.

Ben Demarco led the way for Alfred offensively. Ben scored 8 goals on 10shots and seemed to be unstoppable getting to the net. Mat Zon and Brett Carol also chipped in 3 goals apiece for Alfred to seal the deal.

The loss is the first on the season for SUNYIT, bringing their record to 0-1 (0-0 NEAC).The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, February 27 at home against cross-town rival Utica College. The game is set for a 4:00 pm start time at Wildcat Field.
