'Cats Erupt For 13 Goals in Stinging One-Goal Loss

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Wildcats (0-3, 0-0 NEAC) laid to rest any fears as to their resiliency on Wednesday, playing a remarkable game against host Mount Saint Mary College (4-3) despite a humbling loss to Oswego State in their home-opener just three days prior. The Wildcats more than doubled their season goal output to-date, hanging 13 goals on the Knights in the program's third game. Unfortunately for SUNYIT only one of their 13 scores came in the fourth period, as the Knights ended the game on a 4-1 run to just clip the Wildcats, 14-13.

Wildcat junior Kevin Gardrvits (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Glen Cove) was nearly unstoppable for SUNYIT, totaling a game-high 9 points on 4 goals and 5 assists. Teammate Jon Eguren (Vittoria, Spain / Cicero-North Syracuse) equaled his goal output with four of his own to go along with one assist.

SUNYIT was buoyed by a determined third quarter. Down 8-7 at the half, the Wildcats came out firing, scoring four goals in the period to take a 12-9 lead into the final 15 minutes.

Over the final minutes of the game SUNYIT tried to hang on, but once Knight freshman CJ Cardo tied the game at 12-12 (3:09), the momentum seemed to shift to Mount Saint Mary. Cardo came up big for the home team, scoring or assisting on three of the Knights' final four goals, as Mount Saint Mary took a 14-12 lead.

SUNYIT was able to pull within one with just over a minute to go, but couldn't find the play they needed to tie the game as the Mount Saint Mary defense held on for the win.

In addition to the heroics of Gardrvits and Eguren, Wildcat captain Adam Reynolds (Binghamton, N.Y. / Johnson City) turned in his best performance of the year, finding the net three times and assisting once for a total of four points.

SUNYIT goalie Andre Shattel (Syracuse, N.Y. / Henninger) turned away 9 of the 22 shots he faced to lead both teams in saves.

After snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, the Wildcats will continue the hunt for the program's first win on Saturday, as the team returns to Wildcat Stadium for a 1:00 pm match up with Mount St. Vincent.
