MBB: Wildcats Beat Elmira 74-66 on Day Two of the Max Ziel Tournament.

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's basketball team got themselves into the win column on Saturday with a 74-66 win over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles. The Wildcats are now 1-1 this season. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

The Wildcats fought back from an early first-half deficit to take a 35-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Wildcats ended the first half on a 13-4 run. After taking a 32-31 lead on a Josh Gregory three-pointer with 1:51 left in the half, the Wildcats held the lead for the remainder of the game. SUNY Poly took their biggest lead 11 minutes into the second half, going up nine points on a Jesse O'Dell layup that gave the Wildcats a 58-49 lead. 

 

SUNY Poly outshot the Soaring Eagles 42.2% to 34.3% from the field, 38.9% to 27% from three-point range, and 61.9% to 57.1% from the charity stripe. The team statistics were very evenly matched with the Wildcats narrowly winning three of the major statistics battles. The Wildcats won the turnover battle 10-11, out rebounded Elmira 46-45, and dished out more assists (16-15). 

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: 

  • Josh Gregory was the game's leading scorer and rebounder with a 24 point, 12 rebound double-double. The senior also had four assists and a pair of steals in the win. 

  • Jesse O'Dell had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats. He also had a block and four assists. 

  • Mitch Kernizan had 12 points, four assists, and four rebounds for SUNY Poly. 

  • Dylan Ernst and Sion Nelson made solid contributions off the bench for the Wildcats. Ernst had seven points and six rebounds. Nelson had six points and five rebounds. 

  • Bryan Adams led Elmira with 17 points. He also had a game-high seven assists. 

  • David Kruis had 14 points off the bench for Elmira in 13 minutes of play. 

 

UP NEXT: 

The Wildcats will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on the Colgate University Raiders on Thursday, November 18th at 7:00 PM. The game will be played at Cotterell Court and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
