MBB: SUNY Poly Defeated by Cazenovia in NEAC Conference Game

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's basketball team lost to Cazenovia on Wednesday 73-65. The loss was a difficult one for the Wildcats as they led Cazenovia by ten points at the half. Cazenovia managed an 18 point swing to ultimately defeat SUNY Poly by eight.

For SUNY Poly, Quayshaun Mitchell (Harlem, N.Y. / HS of Graphics Communication Arts) led the Wildcats with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal. Quay shot 43% from the field. Peyton Griffiths (Milford, N.Y. / Milford Central School) and Joseph Ojo (Staten Island, N.Y. / CSI HS) also contributed double digit scoring efforts in the game. Griffiths had 14 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Ojo dropped 13 points, had two assists, two steals, and a rebound.

The problem for SUNY was turnovers. The Wildcats turned the ball over 23 times in the game, 13 of which came in the second half where Cazenovia outscored Poly by 18.

Cazenovia was propelled by a pair of 18 point performances by Avery Wilmore and Ryan Gavin. Gavin grabbed nine rebounds in the game and Wilmore had seven steals.

Statistically, SUNY Poly had a slim edge in field goal percentage (42.1%-41.8%) and three point percentage (28.6%-27.3%). Poly also had more assists (14-5), and more rebounds (39-31). Cazenovia had less turnovers (16-23) which led them to more points off turnovers (21-19). Caz also had more points in the paint (32-30) and more second chance points (8-5).

The loss puts SUNY Poly's season record at 7-9 (6-2 NEAC). The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Cobleskill to take on the Fighting Tigers in a NEAC Conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
