Men’s Basketball Ends Regular Season with 31-Point Victory over Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, NY – The SUNYIT men's basketball team ended its regular season on a high note, convincingly defeating Cazenovia College 90-59 in NEAC action Saturday to win its third straight contest.  The Wildcats finished the regular season 14-10 overall, giving them their third straight winning season and fifth out of the last six years.

Cazenovia hung around early on, being down just four, 16-12, after eight minutes of action.  SUNYIT would blow the game wide open from there though, going on a 19-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 19-point lead.  Cazenovia could not recover, as the Wildcats would lead by double digits the rest of the way en route to the lopsided victory.

SUNYIT shot 47 percent from the field on the day and won the rebounding battle 49-25, including 18 offensive boards that led to 23 second-chance points for the Wildcats.

Senior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the year, which places him tenth in the nation in that category.  Sophomore Derek Rowe (Mexico, NY/Mexico) also posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) finished with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals and fellow classmate Calvin Logins (Lyons, NY/Keuka College) registered 13 points, seven boards and three steals.

Joe Nichols scored 21 points for Cazenovia, with Darnell Sampson adding 11 points.

SUNYIT finished 13-5 in conference play and will now head into this weekend's NEAC Championship Tournament as the second seed.   The Wildcats, who have won the last two NEAC championships, earned a first-round bye in the six-team tournament and will advance to Saturday's semifinal round.  They will take on the winner of Friday's quarterfinal round match between No. 3 seed Wells College and No. 6 SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday at 2:00 pm.

Penn State Harrisburg earned the top seed and the right to host the tournament after finishing 14-4 in NEAC play.  They will square off against the winner of Friday's quarterfinal round match between No. 4 seed Gallaudet University and No. 5 seed SUNY Morrisville on Saturday at 4:00 pm.

The championship contest is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 pm.
