Men's Basketball Registers Fourth Straight Victory with 78-65 Win over Wells

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT men's basketball team shot 50 percent from the field and registered its fourth straight victory with a 78-65 win over the visiting Wells College Express in NEAC action at the Campus Center Gym Wednesday night.  The win helped the Wildcats improve to 5-2 in the conference and 6-7 on the year, while Wells fell to 3-3 in the NEAC and 3-9 overall.

The hot shooting began in the first half for SUNYIT, as the team made 56 percent of its shots from the field and also went 4-for-7 from the free throw line.  The Wildcats also played stifling defense, holding Wells to 28 percent shooting in the half, which helped them take a 43-26 lead into intermission.

The Wildcats cooled down a bit in the second half by shooting 44 percent from the field, but still held at least an eight-point lead throughout the half en route to the 12-point victory.

Senior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent), who became the program's all-time career points leader a game ago and earned his seventh career NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week award earlier this week, finished with game highs of 23 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.  Senior Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) finished with 17 points, six assists and six rebounds, while fellow classmate Calvin Logins (Lyons, NY/Keuka College) registered 14 points, five rebounds and game-high five steals.

Mabior Mayen scored 22 points for Wells, while Terry Harrison finished with 18 points, 11 boards and seven assists.

The Wildcats will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to take on conference foe Keuka College next Wednesday, January 19.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
