UTICA, NY – SUNYIT senior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) broke the school record for career points and finished with a game-high 23 points to lead the Wildcats to their third straight victory with an 87-82 win over the visiting Penn State Harrisburg Nittany Lions Sunday. The Wildcats are now 4-2 in the NEAC and 5-7 overall, while Harrisburg dropped to 5-2 in conference play and 5-8 overall.
Golembiowski, who is also the program's all-time leader in rebounds, blocks and 3-pointers made, came into the contest needing six points to pass the mark of 1,800 points set by Bob Graham (1984-87). It did not take long for the 6-foot-7 center to accomplish the feat, hitting a 3-pointer on the team's second possession and then registering a three-point play with 15:08 left in the first half, making a layup after a hard foul to tie the mark and then sinking the freebie to claim the record.
Golembiowski finished with 11 points in the first half, which saw SUNYIT go up by as much as 11 points before the Lions clawed their way back into the contest to take a one-point, 38-37 lead into halftime. The contest would remain close in the second half, which saw nine lead changes and seven ties, with the last coming at 78 all with 3:25 left to play. From there, a layup by Golembiowski would begin a 9-4 SUNYIT run to finish the game and seal the victory for the Wildcats.
Golembiowski added 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals to his point total, while senior Calvin Logins (Lyons, NY/Keuka College) finished with 21 points, four boards and three steals. Sophomore Derek Rowe (Mexico, NY/Mexico) had 15 points and six rebounds and fellow classmate Justin Brignola (Clifton Park, NY/The Sage Colleges) added 12 points as key reserves for SUNYIT, while senior Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) finished with game highs of 10 assists and six steals.
Nick Liddell scored 25 points for Harrisburg, while Kenton Alston had 20 points and a game-high five blocks and David Reisinger chipped in 11 points.
The Wildcats will look to continue their winning ways this Wednesday when they host NEAC rival Wells College at 7:00 pm.
