Men's Basketball Falls to Medaille on Last-Second Free Throw

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 75-74 loss on a free throw with no time remaining at the Campus Center Gymnasium Tuesday night.  The Wildcats are now 0-2 on the year, while Medaille improved to 1-2.

With the game tied at 74 all and five seconds remaining, Medaille senior Ricky Reed drove down the court and put up a desperation shot that would fall short as the buzzer sounded.  However, Reed was able to draw contact and head to the line for a chance to win the game, and he did just that, swishing his attempt and giving Medaille the victory.

SUNYIT had built a lead of as much as 15 in the first half before heading into the break with a 10-point advantage.  Medaille would come out with a 14-7 run to open the second half and cut the Wildcats lead down to three, 53-50, with 14 minutes to go.  The Wildcats would build their lead back up to seven over the next seven minutes, but an 8-1 run by Medaille tied the game at 69 all with three minutes to go.

A three-point play by senior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) gave the Wildcats back the lead, but five unanswered points by Medaille gave them a two-point lead with 16 seconds left.  Senior Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) drew a foul on the next possession and sank both free throws to tie the game at 74, which would then lead to the thrilling final possession.

Golembiowski finished with a game-high 26 points and added nine rebounds and three blocks.  Senior Calvin Logins (Lyons, NY/Keuka College) scored 16 points and grabbed seven boards, while fellow classmate Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) finished with 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and a game-high four steals.

Reed finished with a team-high 15 points and five rebounds, while David Shuey scored 12 points.  Ron Malicki scored 11 points and grabbed four boards and Angel Flores registered 10 points and a game-high eight assists.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Monday, November 29 when they travel to take on local rival Hamilton College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
