BASE: Wildcats Split Non-Conference Doubleheader at Hilbert

CHAFFEE, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly baseball team split with Hilbert College on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader on the road. The Wildcats put on an offensive clinic in game one, scoring 17 runs on 15 hits to win 17-6. Game two was a tightly contested, low-scoring game that saw the Hawks walk it off in the bottom of the seventh 4-3. The Wildcats are now 7-11 this season.

 

GAME ONE:

SUNY Poly – 17

Hilbert – 6

WP: Aaron Kifer (2-1)

LP: Zackory Panfil (1-2)

 

SUNY Poly dominated Hilbert 17-6 in the first game of the doubleheader. SUNY Poly jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Hilbert responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, but SUNY Poly quickly regained the lead and never looked back.

 

SUNY Poly's offensive onslaught was led by James Lynch and Don Vento, who each had multiple hits and three runs batted in. Paul Barber had four RBIs on one hit, and Ryan Pelton had three RBIs and hit a home run. Alexander Bonacci and Carter Romansky also contributed to the team's success with two hits each.

 

Meanwhile, SUNY Poly's pitchers held Hilbert at bay. Aaron Kifer earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing six runs, five of which were earned, with six strikeouts. Ryan Waring pitched three scoreless innings in relief.

 

For Hilbert, Thomas Evans had three hits and three RBIs, including a home run. Patrick Whelan and Jairo Santos also had multiple hits for the Hawks.

 

GAME TWO:

SUNY Poly – 3

Hilbert – 4

WP: Brendan Walsh (3-0)

LP: Jack Montanye (2-3)

 

Hilbert got a strong performance in game two by Patrick Whelan who hit a home run and drove in two runs. SUNY Poly's Alexander Bonacci also had a great game with a hit and an RBI.

 

In the first inning, Hilbert's Jack Duffek singled to left field, scoring Patrick Whelan, giving Hilbert an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, SUNY Poly's Ryan Pelton hit a single to right field, bringing in Alexander Bonacci, tying the game at 1-1.

 

In the bottom of the fifth, Whelan hit a home run to left field, putting Hilbert up 2-1.

 

In the bottom of the seventh, SUNY Poly rallied to score two runs, with Bonacci hitting an RBI single and Ethan Merone hitting an RBI single, tying the game at three.

 

Hilbert walked it off in the bottom of the seventh when Ben Chowaniec hit an RBI single, scoring Griffin McAndrews giving Hilbert a 4-3 victory.

 

Carter Romansky pitched 5 innings for SUNY Poly, allowing 2 runs and striking out 7 batters. Daniel DeBruin and Jack Montanye also pitched for SUNY Poly. Josh McTigue pitched 3 scoreless innings for Hilbert, followed by Blaine Morgan and Brendan Walsh who earned the win.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will host Sage College on Wednesday, April 5th. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 PM first pitch at SUNY Poly's Peter A. Spina Field. The game will be streamed live on the SUNY Poly Sports Network (SPSN) weather pending.
