THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly baseball team split a doubleheader with Maritime College on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats won the first game 13-12 after a slugfest that saw the two teams combine for seven home runs. Maritime won the second game 10-3 in a rain-shortened six-inning game. HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game one of the doubleheader was a wild one that featured a total of 25 runs and 26 hits, with SUNY Poly scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead that would ultimately win the game.

Maritime jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. The Wildcats answered with three runs in the top of the second. Carter Romansky hit his first career home run in the inning. Chris Martin had an RBI ground-rule-double, and Don Vento had an RBI double that drove in Martin.

Maritime tied the game at three in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch but the Wildcats answered back with another Carter Romansky home run, this time a two-run homer, to take the lead back.

A couple of sacrifice flies and an RBI single drove in three runs for Maritime in the third and fourth inning to give them a 7-5 lead, but the Wildcats would not give in, scoring a run in the fifth and three-four in the sixth to take back the lead. Ryan Pelton drove in three of those runs for the Wildcats on an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run home run in the sixth. Alexander Bonacci and Paul Barber both had RBI singles in the sixth. Maritime would pull to within one run (10-9) in the sixth on a two-RBI double.

With a one-run lead in the seventh, Alexander Bonacci gave the Wildcats some much-needed insurance with a three-run home run. With a three-run cushion, Aaron Kifer shut the door to earn his first save of the season.

Salvatore Mecca earned his first win of the season on the mound for the Wildcats. He threw three innings, struck out two, and allowed three earned runs. Jack Kellner was on the losing side of the pitching decision for Maritime. He allowed four runs in 1.2 innings.
