BASE: Wildcats Homer Three Times in Split With SUNY OCC.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly baseball team split with SUNY OCC on Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. The Wildcats were beaten in game one 13-7 but bounced back in game two to earn a dominant win 26-6. The Wildcats are now 5-8 this season.

 

GAME ONE:

SUNY Poly – 7

SUNY OCC – 13

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Onondaga Community College defeated SUNY Poly 13-7 in a college baseball game played on March 21, 2023. Despite the loss, SUNY Poly started strong by scoring three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. However, Onondaga responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs and cutting the lead to 3-2. Onondaga took the lead in the fourth inning and never looked back, adding 10 runs in the sixth inning to seal the win.

 

Jack Knapp earned the win for Onondaga, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out seven batters while allowing five runs. Connor Marcello took the loss for SUNY Poly, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Poly started strong by scoring seven runs in the first inning, but Onondaga rallied back with five runs of their own. However, SUNY Poly continued their offensive onslaught with six runs in the third inning and two in the fourth inning. Poly continued to extend their lead with a run in the fifth, a run in the sixth, and a whopping nine runs in the top of the seventh. The final score was 26-6.

 

Jack Montanye picked up the win for SUNY Poly, pitching four innings and allowing six runs. Eric Korzeniewski was the losing pitcher for OCC. He allowed seven earned runs in 2/3 of an inning. Samuel Vainauskas had a solid relief appearance for the Wildcats. He allowed just two hits and no runs in three innings and had a strikeout.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Alexander Bonacci went 5-for-7 at the plate with a home run, five RBI, and four runs scored.
  • Ethan Merone went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, four runs scored, and a stolen base.
  • James Lynch went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
  • Don Vento hit a triple, drove in three runs, and scored two runs.
  • Ryan Pelton hit his second home run of the season. He had two RBI and scored a run.
  • Tyler Campbell went 4-for-4 at the plate for OCC. He hit a double, drove in a run, and scored once.
  • OCC's Jake Khouri went 3-for-4 at the plate, hitting a triple and scoring two runs.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will travel to Oneonta to take on the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons in a non-conference nine-inning game. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Wednesday, March 22nd.
